PBL at the Greenbrier: A First for SEAAIS

Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs West Virginia during SEAAIS meeting

We were honored to be invited to join the faculty at the Southeastern Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Society (SEAAIS) 80th Annual Meeting at the historic Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. With a history dating back to 1778, the setting itself was remarkable — and made even more special by the opportunity to introduce something new, PBL, to their historic annual meeting.

Alongside colleagues Allen Meadows and Russell Settipane, we were invited to integrate a PBL case into the meeting curriculum — the first time this approach had been included in the program in the meeting’s 80 year history. The session brought participants into the case from the start, encouraging discussion, collaboration, and clinical reasoning in a way that felt both engaging and practical.

Moments like these reinforce what we’ve seen time and again: when learners are actively involved in working through real cases, the experience becomes more meaningful — and the learning lasts.

And of course, there were a few lighter moments along the way. We were able to enjoy time at the Greenbrier with our wives, including a memorable evening at one of the resort’s restaurants — a nice balance to a very full and rewarding meeting.

The feedback from colleagues of the organization and board was heartwarming and they in fact invited us back to their annual meeting in September 2026 in Hilton Head Island.
